Cute DIY Halloween Costumes for Teen Girls (With Links)

Halloween is coming up soon, and I’ve started to look for costume ideas. Yes, I know it’s June, yes, I know we still have five more months but it doesn’t hurt to get started early does it?

Once I started middle school, I stopped shopping for my costumes in the Halloween section of Target and started creating my own unique outfits with my friends! I’ve been everything from a Minion to a cheerleader- and I’ve found each piece of clothing myself and styled matching outfits with my friends. I will link the exact clothes I wore, or the closest thing I can find.

6th Grade- This was the first year I didn’t just wear a Disney Princess dress from Target and the first year I wanted to be something cute and not as kiddy. I was a cheerleader this year with a bunch of my friends and it was so cute! Warning though- this is probably not a great outfit if you’re concerned with staying warm. I can’t remember super well but I live in the Bay Area (California), and it’s always a little chilly in October here.

For this outfit, I shopped mostly on Shein. For my shirt, I had a white lettuce trimmed loose cropped-ish top that I got in a three-pack with the same shirt in black and white. I don’t think they sell this anymore, and it’s a bummer because years later I still wear these shirts all the time. I’m looking for something similar online, but everything I’m finding is rib-knitted, which isn’t what I want, but it’ll have to do because I seriously cannot find one that isn’t ribbed. The closest one I can find is this ASOS one. It has a similar fit and it looks almost exactly like the shirt I have if it was rib-knitted. This skirt that I got was also off of Shein but I can’t find that either. However, it was a lot easier to find an almost-exact replica of it. It was a pink plaid tennis-ish skirt. I found one from Forea that looks pretty similar and is really cute. I love this because I can wear it when I’m playing tennis or golf, so it isn’t a one time purchase and I can use it a lot. I also had knee-high white socks to really complete the look. I don’t remember which ones I got specifically, but these socks from H&M look like they could be it. I wore these with my Adidas Grand Court 2.0s, which are my go-to everyday shoe.

The next year was a different school with a different set of friends, and I was an angel! This one was me and my friend wanting to dress up and look really pretty, but not spend too much money, so we bought a cute dress and some wings. I got both of them off Shein, again, because Shein has really good clothes for costumes. I can’t find the exact dress-who’s surprised- but this one is super cute and I’d probably buy this one if I was going to be an angel again. It was a super cute dress with long sleeves, a square neck, and a flowy bottom, which this dress also has. I also got wings and a halo, of course, because you’re not an angel without wings and a halo. I think mine had feathers like this one and a halo like this one, but I’m not completely sure. This one could actually be the one I had.

I was an Minion that year and I again DIYed this costume from- you guessed it- Shein! I had a yellow cropped tank top that honestly was a really ugly color. It was like a mustard yellow but in the worst way possible. This shirt is way cuter than what I got and if I could do it again, I’d probably buy this one. Honestly, even on Shein there were so much better options than the one I got. I got these super cute shorts overalls, and for me, it wasn’t too cold, but it could be for others. I got these and they were really cute and really flattering, but some people may think it’s too short. This was my whole outfit, I didn’t have any goggles, but if I could do it again, I would’ve gotten some. At a Halloween event I went to, somebody asked me if I was a farmer… so maybe it would be a good idea to get some!

These are my DIYed costumes that I’ve done so far. My favorite by far was the Minion one, it was so cute and the clothing pieces were actually reusable and not just a one-time use. I love that because I don’t like wearing an outfit one time and never wearing it again, so the fact that I can wear those overalls is something I love about this outfit. It’s the perfect summertime, Fourth of July outfit if you switch the yellow shirt for a black one.
